It is with great excitement that we announce the date and location of our 2015 conference - November 5-7, 2015 at the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Andrea White Markham, RRT, CRE, is the Chair of this year’s conference. We have begun planning the program and are looking for your input. Do you have any ideas for the program? We are looking for suggestions for any speakers that you may have heard at another conference and think our educators would like to hear. Are there any topics that you would like to see covered?

Please take a moment and give us your ideas:

We are also looking for people who may be interested in joining this year’s planning committee. If you are interested, please email Andrea at All planning meetings will take place by web meeting.

Presentations, Workshops & Posters

One of the main reasons CNRC conferences are always rated so highly is because it is the only conference in Canada that is developed entirely by our certified educators for the specific needs of our educator community.

We want your participation!
Our Calls for Plenary Presentations & Panels, Workshops and Posters have opened. We have a fun “two-minutes/two slides” format planned for poster presentations this year. If you have any questions about presentations, workshops or posters, please feel free to give us a call in the office.

The Hotel
We have secured an amazing hotel rate for this year’s conference. The room rate is $109 (Cityview) or $139 (Fallsview).

There is also a $9.95 resort fee per day. The resort services fee includes lots of extras: free Wifi with endless devices, unlimited long distance anywhere in the USA and Canada, unlimited local calls, 2 bottles of complimentary water per day, in-room Starbucks and Tazo teas, Globe & Mail, unlimited access to Sheraton Fitness by Core Performance, printing of boarding passes, and two WEGO tickets (the bus system that connects the hotel with local tourism attractions). We have also negotiated half-price parking on-site for CNRC delegates.

Niagara Falls is located about a 1-1/2 hour drive from Toronto Pearson airport. You can also fly into Hamilton, which would be about a one-hour drive. You could also fly into Buffalo, New York and drive across the border.

We are currently negotiating discounted shuttles and car rentals for travel from the airport to Niagara Falls. We will keep you posted with additional details as they become available.

Message from the Executive Director

cherylHappy New Year!
The beginning of the year is always a time to look back at the past year and look forward to what the New Year will bring.

Let’s start by reflecting on the past year. 2014 marked my 10-year anniversary as Executive Director of CNRC. When I started in 2004, when we were still just the Canadian Network for Asthma Care, there were only 450 Certified Asthma Educators. Today, there are 1,584 certified respiratory and tobacco educators in Canada, the US and internationally. There are 968 Certified Respiratory Educators, 454 Certified Asthma Educators, 92 Certified COPD Educators (our US colleagues), and now 70 pioneering Certified Tobacco Educators, who were brave enough to challenge the first CTE exam this past November.

Our educators work in a wide variety of healthcare settings, from hospital-based acute care or respiratory education clinics to family health teams and community-based pharmacies and clinics. We have educators in all parts of the country, all ten provinces and two of the territories. (We are just missing Nunavut. We need to do some recruiting in the north!)

In the true spirit of our network, we work with a group of valued training partners - the Ontario Pharmacists Association, Pear Healthcare, the Lung Association’s RespTrec program, the Quebec Asthma and COPD Network, Thompson Rivers University, and our new international programs - the Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital in Saudi Arabia and Delphi HSA that offers programming throughout the Middle East and Northern Africa. Our new tobacco program has brought additional training partners that we are thrilled to be working with, including the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s TEACH program and the Alberta Health Services TRAC program. We’ve come a long way since those first 264 healthcare professionals became Certified Asthma Educators in 1999 (112 of whom are still certified)!

I often speak with industry and government representatives, private insurers, employers, and other non-profit organizations advocating on your behalf and on behalf of the organization. I always start by saying that I am the biggest fan of our certified educators. I will then describe you as the hardest working, most dedicated, and passionate group of healthcare professionals that anyone could ever hope to work with!

CNRC saw many successes in 2014, particularly with the creation of our new Certified Tobacco Educator credential. In addition to our 70 new Certified Tobacco Educators, we also welcomed 17 new Certified Asthma Educators, 141 Certified Respiratory Educators and 4 Certified COPD Educators. Our online community at TimedRight continues to thrive, thanks to all of you. Through the generosity of our educators, our online community has become a robust, valuable and safe place for educators to share resources, ask questions and receive updates on current evidence on health education and promotion, respiratory care, tobacco promotion and cessation, allergy, other lung diseases and relevant co-morbidities. It is also the place you can go to receive information about recertification, conferences, webinars, job postings and volunteer opportunities.

And if any of you have not signed up for our online community yet, you are missing a lot!!! You can sign up here:
(If you have any difficulty signing up, please call Agnes Mocko, our Membership & Events Coordinator, at 905-880-1092 or toll-free at 1-855-355-4672. Agnes will be happy to help you.)

I will complete my New Year message by simply saying “thank-you”. It has been my great pleasure to work with you and on your behalf for the past ten years. I look forward to continuing to work with you to create innovative programming that continues to improve the health and lives of people living with respiratory disease and tobacco use disorder.

My very best wishes for a wonderful, happy and healthy 2015!
